Listed below are links to the individual exhibit sections of our website for you to explore and enjoy. We hope these snippets of Doukhobor life, history and culture, entice you to come and partake in the full experience offered at the Doukhobor Discovery Center!
Village Walk Through
The Doukhobor Discovery Centre is a reconstruction of a typical Doukhobor Village as lived in 1908 – 1939 which makes the whole centre an exhibit unto itself. This online walk through gives you a great example of what to expect when visiting us at the Doukhobor Discovery Centre.
Art Gallery/Craft Centre
The Village Art Gallery/Craft Centre has a rich archive of art, crafts, books, music, imagery and videos relevant to Doukhobor culture and history. These items of knowledge and culture are here for visitors to explore and are also available for sale.
1908 – 2008 Centenary Exhibit
Between 1908 and 1913, about 5,000 hardy souls had trekked to British Columbia to the ‘Valley of Consolation’, so named by Peter Verigin, a new place of solace, Ooteshnie. This exhibit recognizes 100 years of the Doukhobors living in the Kootenays.
Autochrome Exhibit
This is a unique exhibit showcasing digitally restored images of Doukhobor Pioneers as Seen Through Lantern Slides from the early 1900s to 1930! The Autochrome Exhibit is the result of 18 months of digital restoration of autochromes and negatives found in our archives.
The Psalmist Project
In the history of the Doukhobors, Psalm-Singing was a regular activity, as common place as working, eating or sleeping. The Doukhobor Discovery Centre embarked on this project in 2008 to document the diminishing practice of Psalm-Singing in Doukhobor culture today.
Doukhobor Music Online
In 2003, with the financial assistance of the BC Arts Council and BC Museums Association, we were able to embark on digitizing the vast array of Doukhobor music found in our archives and developing this online Doukhobor music archive for the public. This exhibit is an ongoing endeavor and will be updated regularly as more Doukhobor music is located.
The Doukhobor Discovery Centre is located across from the Airport in Castlegar and is open 10am – 5pm daily from May 1 to September 30.
