Doukhobor Discovery Centre Entrance

The Doukhobor Discovery Centre is a reconstruction of a typical Doukhobor Village as lived in 1908 – 1939 which makes the whole centre an exhibit unto itself. This online walk through gives you a great example of what to expect when visiting us at the Doukhobor Discovery Centre.

1908 – 2008 Centenary Exhibit

Largest Migration In Canadian History

Between 1908 and 1913, about 5,000 hardy souls had trekked to British Columbia to the ‘Valley of Consolation’, so named by Peter Verigin, a new place of solace, Ooteshnie. This exhibit recognizes 100 years of the Doukhobors living in the Kootenays.

This is a unique exhibit showcasing digitally restored images of Doukhobor Pioneers as Seen Through Lantern Slides from the early 1900s to 1930! The Autochrome Exhibit is the result of 18 months of digital restoration of autochromes and negatives found in our archives.

The Psalmist Project

Psalm Singing Audience

In the history of the Doukhobors, Psalm-Singing was a regular activity, as common place as working, eating or sleeping. The Doukhobor Discovery Centre embarked on this project in 2008 to document the diminishing practice of Psalm-Singing in Doukhobor culture today.

In 2003, with the financial assistance of the BC Arts Council and BC Museums Association, we were able to embark on digitizing the vast array of Doukhobor music found in our archives and developing this online Doukhobor music archive for the public. This exhibit is an ongoing endeavor and will be updated regularly as more Doukhobor music is located.
