Autochrome Exhibit

Previous curator Larry Ewashen shows off ‘The Lady on a Loom’, a gift presented to Lieutenant Governor Iona Campagnolo.
On April 24th, 2005, hundreds came to the yearly opening celebrations at the Doukhobor Discovery Centre in Castlegar, BC. This season, its 33rd, was officially declared open by Her Honour, Iona Campagnolo, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.
The 2005 season’s opening was fairly significant in that a major restoration project and museum exhibit for the 2005 season was officially open for the public to view; Doukhobor Pioneers as Seen Through Lantern Slides. This unique exhibit of images from the early 1900s to 1930, took over a year to develop and prepare – totally in-house – and involved research and detective work that spanned from Castlegar to Moscow!

Lieutenant Governor Iona Campagnolo gets a private viewing and some historic background from previous curator Larry Ewashen.
An original website was developed to document for the world, the background and history (as we know it) of these autochromes, detail the process by which these glass slides were restored to the point of a print/exhibit, and to show off these images (many of which have never been seen by the public) in an online gallery.
Now published online on August 23rd, 2012, we we’re able to take all of the content from the original Autochrome Exhibit website and integrate it into this completed section of our rebuilt website. We hope you enjoy this online journey stemming from the discovery of these lantern slides, through to the finished remastered results we present you here.
