Petrov Dien / Peter's Day, June 26th 2005
Back to News

On June 26, 2005, the Doukhobor Village Museum was the scene of the annual Peter's Day, the commemoration of the Arm's Burning of 1895.

This year was an especially auspicious occasion as this was the 110th anniversary of this event. Since the original Burning of Arms, which indicated the Doukhobor's firm pacifist stand, this occasion has been commemorated every year, wherever Doukhobors lived.

A highlight of the program was Larry Ewashen reading about the Arms Burning as it was planned and instructed by Peter V. Verigin in exile. This was from a book written by Peter's younger brother Grisha, in which he details the Doukhobor history in Russia during the time of Peter's exile, until his death in Canada in 1924.

This book is currently being translated by Larry Ewashen, Curator, and Dr. Galina Alexeeva, Head of Academic Research at Yasnaya Polyana, the Museum of Tolstoy in Russia.
