A highway directional sign at the Doukhobor
Discovery Centre is nearing completion.
The project has been ongoing for about three years and had to be
done in stages due to financial considerations.
Left, a backhoe
digs out for the forms that are then placed to hold the sign firmly
in the ground.
|
|
A major contributor
to the concept was Skanska at the Brilliant Expansion Project through
their community service grant. HRDC, Nelson office, contributed
labour and materials; other costs came out of general revenue at
the museum.
|
Right,
the forms are proportionally centred, awaiting the pouring
of concrete; the backhoe will fill in the excavation.

|
|
Concrete
is poured to re-enforce the sign's support base.
|
One panel will contain information about
the Discovery Centre, Doukhobor history, and the Village Bistro
(the new on-premises eatery). There will also be highway you
are here' location information.
Fascia for the eves of the roof are being designed and will be scroll-cut
in typical Doukhobor artistry. Local cultural groups will be invited
to prepare a legend which can be posted on the other panel.
|
|
The
pre-built roof is then loaded on top of the poles where its bolted
firmly into place.

|
|
Finally,
the panels are mounted, the ground work cleaned up, and the sign awaits
artwork which is being prepared. |
|
The
artwork for the sign is then carefully prepared via software, printed,
and mounted carefully on a back board which will then be screwed
to the sign itself.

|
Finally,
the panel (left) is affixed, and the sign awaits artwork for the other
side which is now being prepared. |
